Across Europe a new approach to street design and the importance of placemaking is emerging. Prompted by changes in the economics and transport, towns and cities are increasingly questioning the need for conventional traffic engineering, barriers and segregation. In its place comes an opportunity to reintegrate the driver into the social and civic protocols of urban space through low speeds and the removal of state controls – most notably the ubiquitous traffic signal.
