ULI Hines Competition 2015

Winners ULI Hines Competition 2015

For the 2015 ULI Hines Competition, 120 teams comprising 600 students from 60 universities in the United States and Canada proposed a design and development program for the Tulane/Gravier and Iberville neighborhoods in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The competition jury gathered in February 2015 and selected two teams representing Harvard University, the University of Maryland, and a joint team from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as finalists.

The finalists were given the opportunity to expand their original development proposals, which they presented to the competition jury on April 9 during a public forum in New Orleans. The University of Maryland team was awarded the $50,000 grand prize, marking the second consecutive year that the university won the Hines competition.

The winners of the 2015 competition were:
◾Sebastian Dern, Master of Real Estate Development
◾Ashley Grzywa, Master of Architecture
◾Daniel Moreno-Holt, Joint Degree Master of Architecture & Master of Real Estate Development
◾Patrick Reed (Team leader), Master of Community Planning
◾Sofia Weller, Master of Architecture|
◾Faculty adviser: Matthew J. Bell, FAIA, Professor of Architecture
◾Faculty adviser: Margaret McFarland, Director Real Estate Development Program

Their winning proposal – “The Crossing” — fostered sensitive growth in Iberville, Bienville, and Lafitte by engaging the nearby medical campuses and the greenway. It proposed developing a high-quality main street on Derbigny and phasing in diverse housing stock at an appropriate urban scale. In the master plan, new development would support active programming under I-10, ensure affordable housing, and improve the area’s storm water infrastructure. Final phases of the plan reinforced the community-oriented approach. A proposed bus rapid transit worked to improve accessibility for historically disadvantaged communities along North Claiborne Avenue. The ramp relocation and subsequent redesign of Basin Street would unify the Lafitte Greenway and Louis Armstrong Park. Within the newly continuous green space, the Resilience Center symbolizes the essence of the proposal by bringing natives and visitors together to create an improved future for the city and its residents.

The ULI Hines Competition is designed as an exercise; there is no intention that the students’ plans will be implemented as part of any development of the site.
