Winner of the Deutscher Städtebaupreis 2012.
The project for the city centre of Stassfurt, Germany, of the landscape architecture office Häfner/Jimenez has won the Deutscher Städtebaupreis 2012 (German Urban Planning Prize 2012).
The existence of salt mines under the city resulted in a catastrophic sinking of the city centre of 6.30 m since 1883. By the 1960s most of the buildings here present had to be demolished. The project reinvents this space with a new element, a small lake, that organizes a new public space where the traces of the past remind of what this place was and which the people have had the opportunity to colonize again.
