Article 01, paisea 015. Urban furniture and equipment for people | Manuel Martínez Torán
John Heskett is speaking of how important the user is in the development of a good design. In our present situation, faced with the economic and social weakness that has been brought about by the recession, we need to reconsider the areas in which our life takes place, our urban space and landscape. It is important to think about the time spent by our neighbours, our older relatives, our children and ourselves in these types of places, and how we spend our time on leisure, sports, games and social relations. As readers will be aware, streets, parks, squares and all the places where we spend our free time, with their “little benches”… these places have always been considered socially important. The deterioration of their furniture and equipment in recent years as a result of the ills of modern society – urban aggression, a lack of communication between people, a lack of life in the street, etc – is a problem that forces us to reconsider all that is near and dear to us. Sociological evolution seems to be making us pay greater attention to our leisure time, to our human relationships, and to improving our quality of life (sports, hobbies, excursions, etc), principally because we have discovered how important these things are for our psychological wellbeing and our physical health.
