The Fürst-Puckler-Land International Building Exhibition (IBA) is conducting the development process taking place in the most important landscape reconstruction work in Europe. In late 2010 it will present its projects in a historical perspective.
The extraction of lignite carried out over approximately the last 150 years has left it mark on the region of Lower Lusatia located in Eastern Germany between Berlin and Dresden, more than any other industrial sector. Still considered a poor region at the beginning of the 19th century, “black gold” put it on the map. However, man and landscape both paid a high price: more than 80 towns were subjected to intense excavations, leading to the destruction of many agricultural areas and forests. Nature was irrevocably destroyed.
