Article 03, paisea 010. The plants of the botanical garden of Barcelona. José M. Montserrat
The central idea underpinning the conception and development of Barcelona’s new botanical garden is that of teaching, learning and using the plants that live in the Mediterranean climate. Its mission is to explore, describe and conserve the plant diversity of the Mediterranean, to contribute to a better future.
As with all projects, that of the new botanical garden also has a specific starting point, with its roots in institutions, equipment and people. And, naturally, some kind of overriding necessity is what is required to push forward in the search for solutions, in each case limited by initial circumstances. Overcoming the serious limitations of the Botanical Institute and its former botanical garden, affected at the time by construction work for the Olympic Games, was the most pressing priority at the beginning of the 1980s. Holding the Olympics in 1992 provided the catalyst, and a competition of ideas held in 1989, with 32 teams taking part and the winning idea coming from the team led by Carlos Ferrater Lambarri, marked the beginning of this project.
