It is not in vast fields or great gardens that I see the arrival of spring. It is in the few little trees of a small square in a city. Their greenness stands out like a gift and is bright like a happy sadness.
I love those solitary squares, lodged between streets with little traffic, and with no more traffic than the streets. They are useless clearings, things that are waited for, among distant commotions. They bring some of the village to the city.
Bernardo Soares, an assistant bookkeeper in the city of Lisbon (and alter ego of Fernando Pessoa) composed The Book of Disquietude, impressions with no connection or desire for connection, one of which, extract 352, nullifies any other attempt to express the emotions awakened by the trees found in squares.
