We are no longer an opulent society. The crisis has placed us in front of a mirror and shown us the fragility of our economic structure and wellbeing. Environmental sustainability is not only necessary for the survival of the species in the long term, but also a short term economic necessity. We cannot permit public spaces which do not use natural dynamics as positive factors and assets, in other words, as resources and not as a problem.
The city and the garden have, to different degrees, undergone changes in their form throughout history. Thought up by man for man, they have always been a cultural representation of their era. The Renaissance garden or that of Al-Andalus, as symbols of power or images of an earthly paradise, bore no relation to nature in its virgin state.
