Winners and finalist of the Competition for the transformation of La Carlota airbase in a metropolitan green park in Caracas.
The 103 hectares occupied by the Francisco de Miranda military air base (a.k.a. Aeropuerto La Carlota), played a clear role in the city until the recent past. But the dynamics of the metropolitan area of Caracas in the third millennium urges the reconsideration of the use of this space, the conditions of its development and its integration with the urban fabric. This decision was taken in the Plan Estratégico Caracas Metropolitana 2020, which aims to achieve an environmentally sustainable, secure and integrated city, and placed La Carlota as the centerpiece of the capital’s Metropolitan Public Space System. To meet these challenges, the city of Caracas calls all urban multidisciplinary teams willing to compete to obtain the best park idea for the space occupied today by the airport, an environmentally and economically sustainable park that can meet the expectations of the inhabitants of the city, particularly on the issues of social and cultural integration.
